Reclamation

From April 7-May 7, 2025 Reclamation was on exhibit in the Mildred Zahradnicek Gallery in the Music Building at Casper College and was accompanied by my book Pretty Things.

Reclamation is a quiet reflection on resilience, survival, and the reclaiming of what seemed lost. In 2015, a stem cell transplant granted me remission from primary Amyloidosis, but the disease left my heart irreparably damaged, and by 2018, even lifting my camera was impossible. My heart transplant at the University of Utah marked the beginning of healing that unfolded not just in the hospital but on the streets of Salt Lake City, where walking became an act of rehabilitation and each step a reclaiming of my body and my vision. As I moved through the city, I found beauty in the ordinary, structures and landscapes that witnessed my return to strength. This body of work offers a glimpse into that journey: hundreds of images made as I regained the ability to hold my camera again. They are not only a testament to survival but a return to the creative act that had always been my lifeline, and I hope viewers will find in them a reminder that even in the face of profound loss, beauty is always waiting to be reclaimed.
