Season of Protest
In today’s political, social, and cultural climate, some women’s issues gain mainstream attention, like abortion and bodily autonomy, while others remain largely invisible. My capstone work seeks to highlight some of the less visible issues through a series of protest signs designed to inform and provoke reflection. Each sign is paired with an animated experience that is viewable on phones and tablets. The animation will bring the signs to life and share a pertinent fact about the issues addressed.
I designed, photographed, animated, and assembled the work digitally using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Audition, and After Effects. By using physical signs, printed and attached to pickets, viewers can interact with them as they would be used in a real protest. Audiences are invited to pick up the signs and view the aimations by scanning the QR codes.
My work has been influenced by Barbara Kruger’s bold typographical messaging and the Guerilla Girls, an anonymous artist activist group, who use shocking headlines with eye-opening graphics. Through these pieces viewers may encounter issues they hadn’t considered before and engage critically with the ongoing struggles and stories of women in the United States.
