Texture Study 2025

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet beauty in weathered, forgotten things, and these old rail cars outside the historic Laramie Union Pacific Train Depot are no exception. In early spring, Wyoming’s landscape can feel almost colorless, cold, muted, and draped in lingering snow, but coming across this small rail yard satisfied my hunger for color. At first glance, there wasn’t much beyond the pop of a bright yellow caboose, but as I looked closer, I was surprised by how much color and texture revealed themselves. Rust blooming across metal surfaces, layers of peeling paint, and deep shadows created unexpected richness in contrast and value. The rail cars seem to hold the memory of countless journeys. For me, photographing them was a reminder that even in the bleakest seasons, beauty waits patiently to be noticed, tucked into the surfaces time leaves behind.
